Texting whilst driving has been found to be worse than drink driving.

Sending a text whilst driving may not seem as much as distraction as drink driving, but it can impair a driver’s ability causing a 79% drop in attention.

Texting whilst driving can also increase reaction times to hazards by 2 seconds.

Test were carried out in a driving simulator by Which?

In comparison to texting, drink driving increased reaction times by 1.2 seconds and caused an 11% reduction in driver’s attention.

Reaction times when using a phone on hand free were slightly worse and decreased attention by 19%.

Swain & Co.’s personal injury solicitors say that this shows why using your mobile phone at the wheel is dangerous. It puts not only the driver at risk of death and serious injury, but other road users and pedestrians.

The test showed that on average drivers got 12m closer to the care in front and they had a tendency to drift between lanes.

Swain & Co.’s criminal defence lawyers say that the dangers of using a phone whilst driving are well known, and that is why it is illegal to do so.

Being caught texting whilst driving, or using a mobile phone whilst driving, usually results in a fixed penalty fine and points on your licence.

If you injure or kill someone whilst using your phone, the charges are a lot worse and potentially life changing.
